I have recently started a new job as a theatre technician at the theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds with experience working as an LX operator and stage crew member. Outside of work, you can still find me with a camrea in my hand and some editing software open.
Coming from rural Suffolk (as my dad used to say, “It’s not quite the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from here”), I started out in life with a pretty explorative mindset. I was always inclined toward numbers, and as a dyslexic, it seemed from a young age that my path was leading me toward physics and computer science. However, I’ve always had a love for the arts tucked away in my back pocket.
While at the University at Newcastle studying Physics BSc, I discovered my love for student radio. While presenting my weekly shows, I also learned a huge amount about the technology behind audio. Between running the studio and setting up for outdoor live music events, I found myself as the head of Technology and Deputy Station Manager. Due to the nature of student media at Newcastle, I spent just as much time working with NUTV crew, and then, in the blink of an eye, I was the Northern Regional Officer for NaSTA. During this period of time, I was a sponge for knowledge, and between the Covid-19 pandemic and my increasingly difficult physics degree, it got to the point that the main reason I was getting out of bed was to work on some aspect or another of student media.
After the end of university, I found myself with plenty of time on my hands. While on the hunt for work in TV, I began focusing more on my online content creation, something I had started while at university. This is something I want to keep working on throughout my life – I get a real buzz bringing an idea from a couple of sentences in my notebook to a 10-minute-long YouTube video.
I then went on to work for ACS, where I was able to improve my skills working in highest level of live broadcast the UK has to offer. From FA Cup Finals to the Last Night of the Proms, I have experienced operations and engineering throughout the media. I have also gained a great amount of experience in a workshop environment, including cable making and essambley.
